The Legend of Gavia is an evocative work by Ilaria Berenice, inspired by the medieval legend of Princess Gavia — a story suspended between history and myth.

According to the legend, Gavia was a French princess promised by her father to a man of noble rank. Defying her fate, she fell in love with a man of lower status. The two lovers fled together and reached the area now known as Gavi, where they are said to have built a castle. Over the centuries, this structure evolved into what is today the Forte di Gavi, and the town itself took its name in her honor.

In this painting, the couple appears as two softly veiled figures, emerging from layered textures and muted tones, as if held between presence and memory. Beneath them, a stylized, angular view of the Forte di Gavi unfolds in perspective — not as a literal landscape, but as an emotional and symbolic foundation.
